LiMo: the penguin arrives in your mobile
The LiMo Foundation , which aims to create a platform for mobile based on a Linux kernel, yesterday welcomed eight new members, namely SFR , Mozilla Corporation, Verizon Wireless, Red Bend Software, Infineon Technologies, Kvaleberg AS, SK Telecom and Sagem Mobiles, bringing the membership to 40, 5 more than the Open Handset Alliance , supported by Google, which is developing Android .
The launch of a Linux OS for mobile has never been so close, in fact Monday, May 19, the first version will be presented at CTIA in Las Vegas and will soon be integrated by manufacturers. What is already the case of some manufacturers such as Motorola and LG have not waited for this unveiling.
LiMo is thus a little ahead of Android , the output is planned for this season.
Competition between the two projects?
No actor has dared broach the subject, but if you look closer, despite the denials of two consortia, there would be no competition. Some actors are present in LiMo and the OHA, like NTT DoCoMo.
However, both platforms are planned for late 2008 - early 2009, and shares the same goal: Uniting the world in the mobile industry around Linux at the expense of Symbian and Windows Mobile, that is to say, Nokia and Microsoft.
